Pakistan’s first locally produced electric car unveiled on Independence Day
Pakistan's first indigenously produced electric car — the Nur-E 75 — was designed and developed by Dice Foundation, a non-profit organization in collaboration with local academics and industrialists, at a ceremony in Karachi on Sunday. It was unveiled.
The five-seater hatchback has a top speed of 127 kmph and will be introduced to the market in late 2024, said a statement released by the Dice Foundation.
According to a Business Recorder report, the vehicle takes eight hours to fully charge, after which it can run up to 210 km.
Dr Khursheed Qureshi, founder and chairman of Dice Foundation, termed the car as a "game changer for the economy of Pakistan as well as for the common man".
The car will play an "extraordinary" role in helping to combat climate change and protect the environment by moving the country away from non-renewable fuel consumption.
Dr Qureshi said that while the current prototype was a five-seater hatchback, the foundation planned to develop a sedan and a small SUV.
When asked about the price of the vehicle, Dr. Qureshi said that the Honda-E and Nissan Leaf in the same segment are priced at $40,000 and $35,000 respectively, "but the Nur-E 75 will be priced much less".
He also said that 60 percent of the car's components will be produced locally when it is introduced in late 2024, but that percentage will rise to 80 in later years, the Business Recorder reports.
